GILGIT: Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Khalid Khurshed Khan while taking notice of the deteriorating health condition of Abdul Karim, a renowned mountaineer and high altitude porter, announced treatment for the veteran mountaineer on Government’s expenses.

Abdul Karim aka Little Karim who is suffering from liver disease, underwent medical treatment at Rawalpindi and Karachi in 2020 and went back to his village Hushe located in District Ghanche in GB. Recently, his health deteriorated; his relative sent a call for help on social media.

The Little Karim was forced to auction the shirt signed and gifted by renowned footballer Cristiano Ronaldo to meet his treatment expenses.

However, the Chief Minister GB stepped in and directed the concerned authorities to bear all the cost of his medical treatment.

Little Karim has always been hired as a professional high altitude crew/porter. His achievements include the successful climbing of Gasherbrum 2 (8035m) in 1985; Broad Peak (8048m) in 1986; Gasherbrum 2 (8035m) in 1988; attempting K2 (8611m) nine times but weather conditions remained unfavorable each time. Out of such nine attempts, three times, he was just 1000 meters away from the main summit.

Little Karim, in the past, has rescued a few foreign mountaineers by putting his life in risk; many of his companion mountaineers perished during climbing but he is lucky enough and survived despite encountering accidents.

In 1985, French documentary filmmaker Laurent Chevalier directed a film named Little Karim—a movie that won many accolades in France and elsewhere in Europe.
